We were getting strawberries and rhubarb in our veggie bag again this week. Last time I had made a strawberry rhubarb crumble pie for our camping trip. Everyone loved it! I was going to make another one of the same, but if you’ve learned anything through this blog, I don’t usually like doing that. And then Alex found this blog post from Bellwoods brewery. They had a new dessert on their menu to pair with their Omerta beer: a strawberry rhubarb shortcake with cardamom-scented pastry cream and candied pistachios.
That sounded so so good.
I’ve been thinking about the future a lot lately. It’s scary and exciting. Where will we be a year from now? I’ll hopefully be (almost) done my PhD. Will I have a job lined up? What kind of job will it be? Will we be planning a move to a different city? Or maybe buying a house in Toronto.
Summer is the season of love, wedding season. My own wedding anniversary is coming up in August. I can’t believe it’s been almost a year already. And although a year of baking for my husband probably means I wouldn’t fit into my wedding dress anymore, it’s all been worth every second.
Anyone who knows me will tell you that I am stubborn. When I get it into my head to do something, I will keep going until I do it. Sometimes this is good; we call it perseverance. Sometimes this is bad; we call it pig-headedness.
When it comes to this week at work, I am definitely feeling piggy. I cannot solve this problem. Breathe with me.
Just like the heat here, strawberry season has been slow to begin. The baskets of fruit at the farmer’s market are still fairly expensive. But when faced with a divine smelling pint of beautiful, intensely red berries, I had to have them.
Mother’s day is coming up, and as I sit here, sick on my couch, covered in blankets, I can’t help but think of my mom. When I got sick when I was younger my mom would blame that colder day when I didn’t wear a hat or something silly like that. But nevertheless, she would bundle me up in my bed and read me books out loud. She would comfort me because I was sad that I had to miss school (I know!). She would bring me meals to bed and always have a warm cup of tea on a bedside table.
